Mindlet vs ChatGPT: an assistant that answers, an app that makes it stick

ChatGPT has become many students' first reflex, and it explains things very well. A study app does a different job: deciding what to review, and when.

What works

Studying with ChatGPT: what works well

For understanding a notion, ChatGPT is very effective: it rephrases, gives an example, explains step by step. Its study mode, launched in July 2025 and available on every plan, asks you questions instead of handing over the answer. Since August 2026 it offers interactive quizzes in the conversation, and since September 2026 flashcards you flip and mark as known or to practise again.

For a first pass on a chapter, it's a genuinely good tool. You can upload your PDF and ask it to quiz you.

What's missing

What's missing: scheduling, tracking, routine

Long-term memory plays out over weeks. You need to see a notion at the right time, then a bit later, then later still. In the OpenAI help pages we checked, we found no mention of spaced repetition: you mark a card to practise again, but it's up to you to come back. OpenAI even suggests that teens create a scheduled task themselves to review their cards.

Mindlet does that job for you. FSRS-6 works out, for each card, the day to see it again, and adjusts its settings every week to how you forget. You open the app and the cards that are due are there, in a dozen formats. You get at most one reminder a day, never during quiet hours.

Forgetting curve and spaced reviews Without review, memory of a lesson drops within days. Each review, placed just before forgetting, lifts memory back up and makes the next drop slower. What you remember Time review 1 review 2 review 3 With spaced reviews Without review
Illustration of the principle, not a measurement.

Reliability

Sources, errors, checking

A general assistant answers from what it knows and what you give it. It can be confidently wrong, and nothing guarantees it sticks to your course rather than a similar one. That's true of any AI, Mindlet included: our terms say so.

The difference is the starting point. Mindlet's cards come from your document, notion by notion, and each stays editable. During review, a hint can help without giving the answer away. Checking is still your job, but you're checking your own course, not an answer from elsewhere.

Data

OpenAI, Mistral AI and your notes

On the Free, Plus and Pro plans, OpenAI says your content may be used to train its models. You can opt out in Settings, Data controls, by turning off "Improve the model for everyone". Business, Enterprise and Edu plans aren't used by default.

Mindlet runs mainly on models from Mistral AI, a French company, and our terms say we don't use your content to train models. We didn't review Le Chat, Gemini or Claude for this page; for each of them the question is the same: does it schedule your reviews over time? See how we use AI.

Which one for you?

ChatGPT or Mindlet: it depends on you.

Pick ChatGPT if…

  • you mainly want to understand a notion, rephrase it, see an example;
  • you need an assistant for many things besides studying;
  • you study occasionally, with no distant exam date;
  • you already use it and one more app would put you off.

Pick Mindlet if…

  • you need to remember a syllabus over several weeks;
  • you want an app to decide what to review each day;
  • you want practice exams graded out of 20, topic by topic;
  • you'd rather your courses weren't used to train models, and a French interface is fine.

Using both

ChatGPT to understand, Mindlet to remember

Nothing stops you keeping both. Mindlet's assistant also answers your questions, from your own documents (in French).

  1. Drop your course into Mindlet

    The same PDF you would give ChatGPT, or the video, or the recording.

  2. Ask Mindlet your questions

    « Demander à Mindlet » (ask Mindlet): the assistant knows your collections and explains a notion another way.

  3. Import existing cards

    Flashcards in CSV or text import through « Importer un paquet Anki », where you pick the columns.

  4. Let the schedule work

    Come back for a few minutes each day: Mindlet shows you what's due.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT good for studying?

For understanding, yes: it explains, rephrases and quizzes you, especially in study mode. For remembering over time, it lacks scheduling: research shows that spacing reviews matters (Cepeda et al., 2006, Psychological Bulletin), and OpenAI doesn't mention spaced repetition. A dedicated app like Mindlet handles that part.

How do I get ChatGPT to quiz me on my notes?

Upload your file (3 uploads a day on the free plan), turn on study mode and ask it to quiz you. You can also ask for flashcards. Remember to come back to the cards you missed over the following days: ChatGPT doesn't schedule that for you.

Can ChatGPT make flashcards?

Yes. Since September 2026, ChatGPT creates interactive flashcards on all its plans: you flip a card, mark it known or to practise again, shuffle the deck, and cards are saved to a library. Reviewing the cards you missed isn't scheduled over time.

Is studying with ChatGPT cheating?

Getting quizzed to learn isn't cheating. Handing in graded work written by AI can be, depending on your school's rules: check them. When studying, what matters is that you do the answering, not the AI.

Which AI is best for studying?

A general assistant (ChatGPT or similar) to understand; a spaced repetition app to remember. Mindlet combines both from your documents, mainly with Mistral AI models, though its interface is in French. Our study app comparison covers seven tools.

Can teenagers use ChatGPT?

Under OpenAI's terms for Europe, you must be at least 13 (or the minimum age in your country), with a parent's or guardian's permission under 18. Mindlet is open from 13; younger users need an account created and managed by a parent.
